Our objective is to prepare fellows for a career in adult congenital heart disease and continue to train future leaders in this emerging field. During the two-year fellowship, we will build on categorical cardiology training from either pediatric or adult cardiology, which allows fellows to master the complexity of adult congenital heart disease. ACHD fellows will work with a multidisciplinary team, which also fosters individual career interests. Thank you for your interest in our fellowship program.

Mortality in adults with congenital heart disease

Congenital heart disease is one or more problems with the heart's structure that exist since birth. Congenital means that you're born with the defect. Congenital heart disease, also called congenital heart defect, can change the way blood flows through your heart. Some congenital heart defects might not cause any problems. Complex defects, however, can cause life-threatening complications. Advances in diagnosis and treatment have allowed babies with congenital heart disease to survive well into adulthood.

Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program
Objective: This study aimed to examine the association between physical activity PA and depression in a large international cohort of adults with congenital heart disease ACHD as data about the differential impact of PA type on depression in this population are lacking. Cochran-Armitage tests were performed to assess trends between depressive symptom levels and PA participation. Chi-Square and Wilcoxon Rank Sum tests were utilized to examine relations between depressive symptom levels and patient characteristics. Stepwise multivariable models were then constructed to understand the independent impact of PA on depressive symptoms. Physically active individuals were less likely to be depressed than those who were sedentary.

Adult congenital heart disease ACHD often leads to increased blood flow in the pulmonary circulation resulting in pulmonary arterial hypertension PAH , which is associated with increased patient morbidity and mortality. The most common classification of ACHD-PAH patients is in four groups depending on the defect type, shunt direction, and history of congenital heart disease surgical correction. Adult congenital heart disease ACHD often leads to increased blood flow in the pulmonary circulation due to a blood shunt from an intracardiac defect or extracardiac communication.
