Getting curious myself, I ended up searching for the answer online and wound up finding a U. According to their report:. Excavations in archeological sites have proven that during prehistoric times, the native Negritos came in contact with Malays and Indonesians who left their ancestral home in Southeast Asia by crossing the seas in their sailboats balangay , and settled the Philippine archipelago. Unless their origins are from China or some sort of Asian culture then you can say they're Asian. Hell, most half Asian people mixed with Caucasian or African look more noticeable Asian than most Filipino's.

U.S. CENSUS BUREAU TO RECLASSIFY FILIPINOS FROM ‘ASIAN’ TO ‘PACIFIC ISLANDER’ |
Just because Phillipines does not touch the Asian continent doesn't make us Pacific Islander. Long, long time ago people who are now called Filipinos by the way our name came from Spanish name of our country - Las Filipinas -the Phillipines - henced Filipinos came from the land now called Malaysia, Indonesia, Burma or even from the Thailand or Vietnam, China or Japan and they were Asians, People that came from the continent called Asia. Indians, Pakistans are also Asians but the more you are farther from Asian continent and are closer toward the West such as Europe you are in the middle - henced Middle East continent and are called Middle Easterners and from there European continent where you see People called Europeans. Some answerers here think because filipinos and haiwaiians and samoans look close so they immediately jump into conclusion that filipinos are pacific islanders, wow thats surprisingly simpleton of them because they are shallow and dumber than dumbo. Except for the Filipinos that emigrated there, we are actually not very related to the polynesians that are generally termed Pacific Islanders. Look at Asi Taulava. Now there is a Pacific Islander.

Filipinos Asian or Pacific Islander?
For Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, NBC News is taking a closer look at some of the terminology used when discussing Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in order to better understand why certain words and phrases are or aren't used. Where did the "model minority myth" come from? What does "hapa" mean? We asked academics and experts to answer those questions and more. In , the term "Asian American" was coined by Yuji Ichioka and Emma Gee and other student activists as a strategic, unifying political identity for Asian ethnic groups to use as they resisted U.

I am looking for advice on how I should identify ethnically when applying for college. I know that socially, it is acceptable to select Asian I am filipino and it is probably true that many filipinos do that. However, there are other options that filipinos sometimes tend to identify with. I have known some filipinos that identify as both Asian and Pacific Islander and may be inclined to select the latter in their application. What I am concerned is whether selecting the latter will make a difference.
